My Introduction: |
I met the missionaries while studying Japanese at university and was fortunate to be sent to Japan on my mission about a year after my baptism. Upon my return to Canada, I added Mandarin to my studies and then returned to Japan as an editor and translator. After engagements to be sealed to Japanese and Taiwanese sisters in the Tokyo and Taipei temples unexpectedly fell through at the last moment at the ages of 27 and 29, I panicked and married a nonmember ethnic Korean from Beijing, China, at the age of 32. After raising our three daughters together for more than 20 years, we mutually decided to divorce since I still yearned for a temple marriage, and she remained aloof from the Church. I switched to tutoring English literature and academic writing in 2009 mostly to the children of Chinese immigrants in Metro Vancouver. Since 1985, I’ve been immersed in East Asian culture, but I feel assured that I do share a Western upbringing with other North Americans with whom I can still relate as evidenced by my associations with English speakers at church each week. I truly am willing to live pretty much anywhere. |
